IRONY AND TYPES OF IRONY IN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH
Irony is a figure of speech in which in which the actual intention is expressed in the words that carry the opposite meaning.
The types of irony
i. Situational irony is the irony that involves the situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is contrary to what is expected.
Or is irony of something happening that is very different to what was expected.
Example: two friends coming to the party in the same dress after promising not to wear that dress would be situational irony.
ii. Dramatic irony is the irony that the audience understands something about a character’s or actor’s actions or an event but the character do not.
Example a girl in a movie hides closest to where the killer is while nor knowing (Here the audience knows that the killer is there while the actor doesn’t know.)
iii. Verbal irony is the irony that the speaker intends to be understood as meaning something that is contrary from literal or usual meaning.
This occurs when a speaker’s intention is the opposite of what he/she is saying.
iv. Comic irony is the irony that creates humour effect; it may happen in different forms and can be derived from ironic statement by character or narrator in a literary work.
